SOUNDS BY KRIST

Sounds by Krist is a fourth-year audio production project which consists of three parts:

  1. Audio Portrait: a sound-based ‘snapshot’ of an individual;

  2. Soundscape Composition: an arrangement of sounds to depict a space;

  3. Audio Documentary: a story told by composing narration, music, and sound effects.

Course: COMS 4501A Digital Media Productions

Project duration: September 2022 - December 2022

Tools used: Zoom H1N recorder, Audacity

Audio Portrait
Finding Home
00:00 / 03:06

Where are you from? This is a seemingly simple question, but for Jessica, there is no easy answer. Growing up in 3 countries and speaking 3 different languages, Jessica has gone through a long journey to find a place she calls home. In this audio portrait, Jessica will tell you about her journey, and how she finally feels at home in Ottawa.

-------

For this project, I interviewed my friend Jessica about her idea of "home". I then edited her answers and pieced them together using Audacity to create a seamless story.

Soundscape Composition
Wandering Byward
00:00 / 04:03

This soundscape composition is the documentation of my walk in Byward Market on a Sunday afternoon in late October. It was my first return to this busy area in 2 years, and it has a drastically different vibe from what I remembered 2 years ago. Through this composition, I hope to paint an auditory picture of Byward Market on a busy Sunday afternoon, full of energy, joy and excitement.

-------

For this project, I recorded an array of sounds at Byward Market: sounds of vehicles, people chattering, street performers, and even myself participating in the scene. These sounds were then composed into a cohesive soundscape of Byward Market on a Sunday afternoon in October.

Audio Documentary
Where I Belong
00:00 / 09:52

What you are about to listen to is my origin story, of how I became who I am today. It is my journey of making friends, being inspired, taking on new challenges and making myself a home in Ottawa. I’m going for an audio diary style, with every event told in the present, so you can walk through my journey from moment to moment with me.

-------

For this project, I recorded my narration and layered it with sound effects, music, and sounds from old videos with my friends in AIESEC to tell an authentic story of my experience.
